Published on the occasion of the 2025 exhibition “Robert Rauschenberg: Sympathy for Abandoned Objects” at Gladstone, New York: 21st Street.

Robert Rauschenberg is renowned for famously blurring the line between artistic genres. While celebrated for fusing the distinction between the painterly gesture and three-dimensionality, the artist, nevertheless, maintained a robust sculptural practice throughout his long and prodigious career. Published by Gladstone, this catalog surveys Rauschenberg’s sculpture—spanning his production from the 1950s to the late 1990s—through the lens of scale, comprising over thirty small sculptures that relate in size to the human body, whether floor or pedestal based. Assembled from found material—industrial detritus, everyday objects, decorative items, and organic forms—the sculptures engage with abstraction while remaining rooted in the empirical world. Their various titles further impart the sense of play and artistic freedom that Rauschenberg brought to bear on all his work.

Designed by Chris Svensson, this fully illustrated catalogue features an essay by sculpture expert, Lisa Le Feuvre (Executive Director of the Holt/Smithson Foundation), entries on each of the individual sculptural series represented in the show, and detailed exhibition histories.
